A Brief History of Optimism

To the field of theoretical physics, Stephen Hawking is a rock star. An author, lecturer, Cambridge professor and celebrity in one package, Dr. Hawking ponders infinity while held prisoner in his motorized, computer-controlled wheelchair by the cruel motor neuron disorder Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. His body may be wrecked, but his mind is complete and as close to perfection as any alive today. This inconceivably brilliant thinker constantly dreams of the vastness of the cosmos, black holes, cosmic annihilation, stars living and dying and dancing the cosmic dance of life and death and forces that rent and rip the fabric of space and time as easily as we breathe the air. Lately, in light of the tumultuous history of our early 21st century, Dr Hawking was asked to bring his thoughts a little closer to this world to comment on our chances of survival as a species. He believes the human race does have a chance, if we can avoid catastrophe for the next 200 years...
