The Death of Dignity and Decency

John McCain was a war hero and decent American who believed in taking the high road. He believed in fairness, respect and dignity. He promised never to stoop to the tactics of Swift Boat.

No one seems surprised that Sarah Palin ignores the facts in favor of inciting hatred, but we expected more from her boss.

What happened to John McCain?

Palin: Rhymes with "blunt."

I've heard it argued that Mr. McCain wants to be in the executive so badly, he will ally himself with anyone to get there. That's the reason, those who hold this point of view would point out, that he readily made peace with Mr. Bush after being savaged by the Bush campaign in the 2000 primaries. They also remind us that Mr. McCain hinted he would be willing to run with (liberal Democrat) John Kerry in 2004, and now seems just as comfortable with (Republican conservative zealot) Sara Palin in 2008. All I can offer as commentary to that observation is "maybe."

I am wondering if Mr. McCain, privately at least, is not conceding the presidential race. No doubt, anyone following the political ebb and flow of the past week or so is struck by the sudden, stark nastiness of the comments being made by both candidates on the Republican ticket. Well, on Friday, Mr. McCain seemed to try to change the tone by saying in a speech that Mr. Obama was an honorable man – a remark that drew quite a few boos from the crowd…of his supporters, no less. My thinking is Mr. McCain, having looked ahead and realized the election is lost, now is wanting to end his campaign with his formerly good reputation still intact.

Of course, it is quite likely that the ugly name calling will start again in earnest next week. And, regardless of what Mr. McCain does, Mrs. Palin probably will continue to spew forth venom because, after all, she really doesn’t see herself as someone’s running mate -- bound by his guidelines and priorities -- but as the main attraction.

A few more related thoughts, if I might.

Regarding Mr. McCain's apparent attempts to dial down on the heated rhetoric, it has occurred to me that this may be happening because someone Secret Service? White House, even?) has contacted his campaign with warnings that the comments might inspire if
that is the right word) some self-described, delusional "hero of the white race" to go after Mr. Obama.

Were that to happen, the Bush
Administration could add "racial turmoil" to its list of "achievements," which is why I think they may be involved in toning things down.

Of course, as I suggested earlier, who knows what will happen at the 3rd debate or as things get more and more desperate for the Republican faithful. After all,
Miss Sara has been feedin' 'em red meat, and most want more, more,
MORE!

The real dunderhead in all of this is -- no surprise here -- Miss
Sara. Even if she were aware enough to have calculated the possible damage her words could do to our country, and discarded any resultant concerns, she seems oblivious to one additional, possible outcome. If something were to happen to Mr. Obama, she will not go blameless. She may dismiss with contempt any accusations from the public or from the press, but there
is one probably blow-back that she dare not ignore. Some self-described, delusional "hero of the black race" may decide it is
his duty to go after her to settle the score. In other words, if Mr. Obama is harmed in any way, I think
it highly likely that Miss Sara will be next. Too bad she is not
smart or aware enough to be able to consider that possible outcome. Our nation certainly would benefit from the realization, but one does wonder if the good of the nation is much of a priority for Miss Sara.
